THE LAST CONFERENECE
by Johannes Hoffmann, Wojtek Zrałek-Kossakowski and Ensamble
In 2050, the earth has warmed by 2 °C. Sea levels have risen, hurricanes and superstorms are causing devastating damage worldwide. Millions of people are forced to flee their homes and political tensions are on the rise. In this situation, after the so-called 'point of no return', political decision-makers around the world are trying to negotiate almost impossible decisions regarding the environmental catastrophe. With "The Last Conference", the newly founded Theater des Wissens, directed by Krzysztof Minkowski, is staging a speculative climate conference. The audience is invited to slip into the shoes of international politicians - while "climate terrorists" exert pressure outside, people from all over the world tell their stories of flight, scientists report on how dramatic the situation has become and new organizations are founded to bring hope. The play is an artistic-political reaction to the global human failure to save the earth from the consequences of climate change and dares to look into possible futures. What new narratives can be found in the context of climate change and ecological crisis and which new protagonists could tell of this future?
